Expert Auction Update "Let's Build Some Docks!"

2016 LAB.jpg

Bobcaygeon's one and only Expert Auction is coming up just a month from now! If you haven't got your tickets, this is the time to ensure you're in on the bidding. Tickets are available at My Favourite Place, Kawartha Coffee, Darling Insurance and LiveWell.

Or why not pick up your tickets at the Impact 32 table at the Bobcaygeon Farmers' Market on Thanksgiving Saturday, October 7th, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Remember, you can save $5 a person if you book a table for 10. All proceeds go toward building much-needed docking space at Lock 32.

We've had another exciting new addition to the November 4th Expert Auction – Old Dog Brewery! Ever wondered what magic lies behind the creation of Canada's best-loved quaff? Maybe you know someone who would love a day at Old Dog brewery – this is the gift to delight your favourite beer lover. Bid on a one-of-a-kind day at Old Dog, and uncover the secret world of brewing beer from start to finish. All that, and we're told you get to name your batch, and it comes with lunch and A Very Fancy Certificate.

Talk to us at the Bobcaygeon Farmers' Market, and learn more about Impact 32 if you're interested in a rewarding and unique volunteer experience. Right now, we have a special need for volunteers with tech skills, in addition to our everyday need for anyone from cookie bakers to visionaries to poster-hanging foot soldiers. We'd love to see you at the market.

Impact 32 volunteers work together for our community to grow Bobcaygeon's year-round economy and beautification for the benefit of all residents, businesses and tourists.

Here's more information on Bobcaygeon's 2017 Expert Auction.

2017 Impact 32 Expert Auction

It's Saturday, November 4th, at the Lakeview Arts Barn!

14900405_1447785388583056_1583764688288800618_n.jpg

Back by popular demand – the 2016 Expert Auction was not only an entertaining and exciting evening, it was also a significant and welcome fundraiser making over $25,000 to build new permanent docks for Bobcaygeon.

Folks who came last year are still talking about the great party, the excellent prizes donated by local businesses and, of course, the thrill of bidding on unique expert experiences. We're back again this year at the same location, with the same superb canapes and dessert buffet. Lots of last year's finest talent is back too, as well as lots of exciting new experts.

What's an expert auction?

It is a fun spin-off of a typical live auction... the same bidding process, but we're auctioning off people instead of items! That's right, local experts are donating their time and you'll have the chance to bid on them. We'll have an amazing array of silent auction items, and prizes, and games too.

Happy Days.jpg

Who's up for auction?

We have a great line-up of local talent on the auction block again this year. Everything from traditional services like financial, spa, home and vehicle to experiences like a day out in a new boat for you and your friends with an expert captain from Buckeye Marine to take you fishing, touring, swimming, rafting out, locking through – you name it. Or how about a Happy Days adventure with Cap'n Frank?

And so much more . . . we'll be releasing news about this year's prestigious experts in the coming weeks.

If giving back to the Bobcaygeon community and supporting local people rank high on your list, this event is for you.

I'm in, where do I get tickets?

Tickets are being sold at My Favourite Things, Darling Insurance, Kawartha Coffee, and LiveWell. Why not make up a table for 10, the more the merrier and you save $5 per ticket.

See more details on our Events page http://www.visitbobcaygeon.com/events/2017/11/4/expert-auction-impact-32

Partial Solar Eclipse

solar-eclipse.jpg

On Monday, August 21st between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., we'll be treated to that rare celestial event, a partial solar eclipse. In Bobcaygeon, the moon is expected to obscure the sun by about 75%, and it'll be another seven years before the next eclipse is visible here.

But looking at the sun during an eclipse is a bad idea confirms Jan Cami, director of the Hume Cronyn Observatory in London, Ontario. "You have to be very careful with your eyesight. You have to look at the sun to see the event – the problem is the sun will burn your retina, but you have no pain receptors in your eyes, so you don't realize something is wrong. You can do permanent irreversible eye damage in a matter of seconds."

Those especially at risk are people working outdoors, children playing outdoors, and drivers on the road during the hours of the eclipse.

Did you know?

  • Even when there's not a solar eclipse, the sun can damage your eyes if you look directly at it.

  • It's a good idea to try to stay indoors during the eclipse if possible. Close blinds and other window coverings.

  • Never look at the sun using an unfiltered telescope or pair of binoculars. This applies even if you are wearing Mylar filter glasses, as the focused sunlight can burn through the filters.

  • Do not use normal sunglasses to look at the sun. No matter how dark they are or what their UV rating is, normal sunglasses will not be enough to protect your eyes as you look directly at the sun.

  • Solar viewing glasses or eclipse glasses are safe for viewing if in good condition. Ensure that they are ISO-certified, and bear the number ISO-12312-2:2015.

Welcome Summer! Free Bike Rental

As a special Welcome Summer! offer, Impact 32 is making bike rentals free from now through July 2nd.

“This free offer is our way of introducing everyone to the new bike share program,” says Impact 32's official bike spokesperson Carly Poole. “Anyone who might want to try a bike will get a chance to take one out for a spin.”

The 7-speed bikes are brand new and come complete with helmet, lock, and a basket to hold your shopping or picnic lunch. It's the perfect way to see a little more of Bobcaygeon area if you arrive by boat, and also just a cool way to get around town.

Anyone over 5' tall can rent a bike by downloading the Movatic app to their phone. It's easy to use, and unlocks the bike from the stand for you, then locks it back up when you're finished.

The white city-cruiser style bikes are in stands near the Lock 32 swing bridge, ready to roll. Volunteers have already started to man the Welcome Centre on the northeast side of the swing bridge on weekends and will be available to offer information and tips on local attractions to anyone who drops by.

More volunteers are needed to work 2- or 3-hour shifts chatting with people at the bike station, helping direct visitors, giving info on the bikes as well as answering any other questions that might pop up. Volunteers will be provided with information and hand-outs and stationed inside, out of the elements, so shifts are rain or shine. Anyone who would like to share their Bobcaygeon enthusiasm is asked to click the Volunteer for Bike Sharing button on the home page of www.visitbobcaygeon.com.

Impact 32 is a volunteer steering committee made up of local business owners and community organizers. We impact the growth of Bobcaygeon's year-round economic development and community beautification for the benefit of all residents, businesses and tourists.

Bobcaygeon – There's something in the air

Stroll through Bobcaygeon these days and there's something special in the air – flowers everywhere. Their fresh scent and beauty . . . one of summer's best perks..

DSC_0003.jpg

Luckily for the village, the Bobcaygeon Horticulture society never fails to plant their gorgeous gardens and deck the bridge out in style with appealing displays. And now Impact 32 has added their own special touch with beautiful hanging baskets.

It's all part of making the village a welcoming centre for residents and visitors. A lot of thought and hard work go into beautifying a town, and it's costly too. Until last year, each merchant was asked for a donation to cover the cost.

“It makes a really important difference to small businesses,” says Councillor Kathleen Seymour Fagan, also owner of Kawartha Coffee Company. “It just wasn't fair to ask everyone to come up with the several hundred dollars it costs for a large flower basket and maintenance. So our Impact 32 beautification team applied for and received funding from the Bobcaygeon Community CHEST fund to cover most of the expense, and a smaller amount comes from a City of Kawartha Lakes 50/50 matching fund.”

This year the flowers came from Greenhouse on the River, and Kathleen and Jamie Henderson put up the hanging baskets with a whole lot of up-and-down-the-ladder help from Liam Fagan, 15, and Dr. Michael Fagan.

“We can certainly use more volunteers for beautification projects in Bobcaygeon,” says Kathleen, “and we'd love to get more teens involved. We're also looking for someone to help with administration for the beautification committee.”

Anyone interested can contact Impact 32 by sending an email to visitbobcaygeon@gmail.com and there's also a link at www.visitbobcaygeon.com for volunteers for the welcome centre at the locks and bike sharing program.

Impact 32 is pleased to announce receipt of a generous donation from Heartland Farm Mutual, an Ontario based Insurance Company that partners with Darling Insurance in Bobcaygeon.

On June 14, Heartland President and CEO Carlos Rodrigues and VP Larry Nickel presented Impact 32 with a cheque for $5,000 to honour the hard work of Bobcaygeon's local volunteers.

Heartland's iHeartCommunity Fund aims to give back to the communities they serve by supporting selected projects and initiatives. Heartland’s agents, brokers and staff are encouraged to apply for funds to help local causes close to their hearts.

Impact 32 volunteers help maximize the growth of Bobcaygeon's year-round economic development and beautification for the benefit of residents, businesses and tourists. They operate under the auspices of the non-profit Kawartha Works Community Co-op Inc.

Darling Insurance/JWK Insurance partner and Impact 32 volunteer, Dave Kennedy, heard about the iHeartCommunity Fund donation program and thought the fund could be a good match. He decided to look into it.

Heartland received 93 applications for iHeartCommunity funds this year. Luckily for Bobcaygeon boaters and bikers, Dave's was one of the 38 selected from across the province.

The $5,000 donation contributes to the fundraising drive for additional docking space for boats at the Bobcaygeon locks and will help fund the new bike sharing initiative.

Impact 32 is a volunteer steering committee made up of local business owners and community organizers. We impact the growth of Bobcaygeon's year-round economic development and community beautification for the benefit of all residents, businesses and tourists.

Free WiFi now available at locks in Bobcaygeon, Kawartha Lakes

Free WiFi now available at three locks in Kawartha Lakes

KAWARTHA LAKES-Just in time for the opening of the Trent Severn Waterway's 2017 season, Cable Cable has made free wireless internet (WiFi) access available at the Coboconk, Fenelon Falls and Bobcaygeon locks.

Mayor Andy Letham remarked, "I'm thrilled that Cable Cable has made this possible. Having WiFi available at the locks is a feature that boaters will appreciate. It's an added bonus to the beauty and amenities they will find as they enjoy Kawartha Lakes this summer."

The project was completed by Cable Cable with the assistance of local supplier Lindsay Broadband. Cable Cable president Michael Fiorini commented, "The streamlined timing of this project wouldn't have been possible without the support of Lindsay Broadband delivering the supplies needed, and the cooperation of City staff supporting the installation work. I'm pleased that we were able to meet the Mayor's request to have this up and running for June 1 to welcome the boaters passing through Kawartha Lakes."

Cable Cable Inc. is based in Fenelon Falls and is currently providing free WiFi throughout public spaces in the municipality including various arenas, community centres, libraries, parks and the Lindsay Exhibition.
